December 21, 2018 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 8 manned spaceflight mission. By orbiting the moon and returning safely to earth, Apollo 8 proved to be a vital precursor to the Lunar Landing mission.
One of Apollo 8’s primary objectives was to test radio communications between Mission Control in Houston and the astronauts in space at distances beyond Earth’s orbit, as well as around another celestial body.
Moon Talk is the first in a three-part documentary series about the crucial role that the Collins Radio Company played in helping make that feat possible.
The film premieres Friday, December 21, at 11:30 AM at Collins Road Theatres in Marion. Admission is free.
Along with the movie poster, FUEL also designed the DVD packaging for the film.
“The subject matter of space is very iconic, so the challenge was to find the right formula of relevant imagery that tied Collins Radio’s innovations to space exploration,” said FUEL Creative Director Bill Bollman. “Collins was instrumental in allowing NASA to communicate with their astronauts in near space and beyond.”
This gave some rich creative territory to pull from for the visuals.
“The duality of the sound wave depicting voice communications and the explosive Apollo 8 rocket launch to the moon was the right element of distinction,” said Bollman. “Also, the satellite dish grounds the background to Earth and the starry sky connects us with the outer reaches of space.”
The project is produced by the Arthur A. Collins Legacy Association, a registered non-profit founded to collect, preserve and interpret the legacy of Arthur Collins and the Collins Radio Company he founded.
